Welcome to the Stronsay Heritage Trail
These pages are designed to accompany the 21 plaques and 8 interpretation boards that mark the Stronsay Heritage Trail.
Separate pages for each of the themes represented by the plaques or boards can be opened by clicking on the headings in the menu, but please bear with us, as this heritage trail is brand new (April 2025) and this site is still being developed.
Brochures, which include the map below, can be found in the Fish Mart Cafe, Stronsay Hotel, Ebenezer Stores and the Heritage Centre.
Overview
The Stronsay Heritage Trail extends for about 1.25 miles (2 km) along the village and waterfront from the Old Lifeboat Slip (east) to the St Peter's Kirkyard (west). To help identify locations, the map below has been numbered left to right, but there is no need to follow the trail in any particular order. Most of the trail is accessible by car or bicycle. The stretches marked on the map with a red dotted line are unpaved, but they are mostly level and generally passable.
The interpretation board located in front of the Stronsay Hotel (9) provides an overview of the trail and offers some information about nearby buildings and the history of Whitehall Village as a whole.

Stronsay Heritage Centre
Temporarily housed in Unit 4 of Woods Yard, the Stronsay Heritage Centre is a treasure trove of artefacts, photos, articles and records which can help you better understand the heritage of the island. The Centre is free and open every day from 9 am to 6 pm.
If you're looking for more information about your ancestors, this is the place to start. Census, baptism, marriage and cemetery records are available, as are albums of old photos.
Comfy chairs and self-service tea and coffee facilities are there to encourage you to sit and stay awhile.
A brand-new, purpose-built Heritage Centre is in the planning stage, with hopes that it will be opened in 2026. A donations box can be found in the Centre and the Stronsay Heritage Society is grateful for any contributions you would like to make.
